Sabic and Exxon Mobil in US ethylene JV

Working under the joint venture title, Gulf Coast Growth Ventures, Exxon Mobil Corp. and state-owned Saudi Basic Industries Corp. are seeking to build a $10 billion ethylene plant in the United States.

There are four proposed sites for the plant: two are just south of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; another is in Victoria, Texas; and the fourth location is in San Patricio County.

Gulf Coast Growth Ventures officials estimate that the multibillion-dollar project will create 11,000 construction jobs and 600 permanent jobs with an average salary of $90,000.

A 1,400-acre cotton field in San Patricio County is thought to be the company’s preferred location but following a recent water contamination scare in Corpus Christi, many residents have cited concerns about noise, pollution and other long-term effects.
