Qatar Energy to buy US liquefied natural gas

Qatar’s state-owned energy company, Qatar Energy has signed two long-term agreements with Cheniere Energy, the largest US exporter of gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), to purchase up to 4 million tonnes of LNG annually, Qatar Energy has announced.

Under the sale and purchase agreements, Qatar Energy will source LNG from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana and Corpus Christi facility in Texas, the company said in a statement.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031 and continue through 2054 on a free-on-board basis, meaning Qatar Energy will handle shipping from the US loading ports.

The agreements were signed by Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, who is also Qatar Energy’s president and chief executive, and Cheniere Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Jack Fusco.

Qatar Energy said the agreements reflected its confidence in LNG’s long-term role in the global energy mix and its efforts to build a more flexible, diversified and competitive international LNG portfolio.
